Community Events & Resources- October 11, 2018

Good morning!  Here is a list of community activities and resources that may be of interest to you:
  • The Central High School Cultural and Educational Complex (off of Dogtown Rd in Goochland) is hosting a Youth Paint Night class on 10/15/18 for children ages 5-15!  Come and bring a friend!  For more information contact Central High Cultural & Educational Complex  at (804) 657-2086.
  • The Autism Society of Central VA is offering a 3-part transition workshop for parents of students with autism.  Topics will include disability benefits planning, employment, housing and residential supports, and adult life in the community.  The workshop will take place in November.  You can register through this link.
  • The Byrd Theatre is offering a sensory friendly viewing of the Incredibles 2 on October 20th at 2:00.  Tickets are just $3 each.  See flyer for more information.
  • The VCU ACE-IT in College Open House has been rescheduled for November 10, 2018. Mark your calendars to learn more about this inclusive college certificate program for young adults with intellectual disabilities in the Greater Richmond area.   • Parenting the Love and Logic Way classes start on 10/23!  These classes are free for parents and offer 3, 2-hour interactive workshops on 10/23, 11/6, and 11/13.  Please see flyer for additional details.

Community Events, Activities, and Resources- 10/5/18

Here’s a list of community events and activities that may be of interest to you and your family!

  • There will be a RVA MakerFest on 10:00 to 5:00 on 10/6/18 at the Science Museum of VA.  See flyer for more details.
  • The Autism Society of Central VA is hosting a free workshop on “Autism, Puberty, and Sexuality: What You Need to Know and How to Teach It” on 10/5/18 at 7:00 p.m.  You can register for the workshop through this link.
  • VCU’s Autism Center for Excellence is hosting a webinar on “Technology at School and Home for Students with Autism” on 10/9/18 at 3:30 p.m.  You can register for the webinar through this link.
  • The VA Department of Education is offering a free, 4-hour training for parents of children with disabilities on critical decision points that can affect a child’s ability to earn a diploma and be ready for higher education or a career.  The training will be offered on 12/10 in Richmond.  Please see this flyer for more information about registering.
  • We have a student at our high school who is very interested in starting a Buddy Ball (baseball) rec league here in Goochland!  This student participated in Buddy Ball when he lived in Fluvanna and is super motivated to bring the sport here.  For those of you who do not know, Buddy Ball allows kids with significant disabilities the opportunity to play alongside students without disabilities.  Please complete this google form if 1) you are interested in helping this high school student to create the league and/or 2) if you are interested in your son/daughter participating in Buddy Ball once the league is started.
